Free VPS Hosting: Best Trials and Cloud Free Tiers (2026)

Oracle Cloud and Google Cloud document ongoing free compute allowances. AWS and Azure offer time-limited ways to test cloud VMs. DigitalOcean and Vultr use finite credits. None of these is an unlimited, guaranteed free server.

Start with the duration, region, operating system, and total resource cost your project needs. A free VM allowance does not necessarily cover its public IP address, storage, or outbound traffic.

What We Count As Free VPS

This page uses a stricter definition than many "free VPS" lists:

• Ongoing free compute means a documented monthly VM allowance that can continue beyond an initial trial. Account and resource limits still apply.
• Trial or signup credit pays for eligible usage until its balance or time limit runs out. It does not make the VM permanently free.
• Paid hourly VPS means you pay for the resources you provision. LightNode appears only in this category.

We do not count shared hosting, static site hosting, browser IDEs, Minecraft-only hosting, or app platforms without normal VPS/root access as a free VPS.

Best Choice By Situation

1. Oracle Cloud Free Tier

Oracle is worth checking first for a longer-running Linux lab. Its Always Free resource documentation lists up to two AMD micro VMs. The Arm allowance is 1,500 OCPU-hours and 9,000 GB-hours per month, equivalent to a total of 2 OCPUs and 12 GB RAM for an Always Free tenancy. Use these current limits rather than older sizing advice.

The compute allowance applies in your home region and depends on available capacity. Oracle may reclaim idle Always Free VMs, so keep recoverable backups.

The separate $300 trial lasts up to 30 days. Oracle requires card-based identity verification, and Always Free accounts have no SLA. Read the Oracle Free Tier FAQ before putting a service you depend on there.

2. Google Cloud Free Tier

Google's free-program documentation includes one month's worth of eligible non-preemptible e2-micro VM usage across us-west1, us-central1, and us-east1. Multiple VMs share that time allowance. The Compute Engine overview also lists 30 GB of standard persistent disk and 1 GB of monthly outbound transfer. Check destination restrictions in the free-program table.

An external IPv4 address has separate Google Cloud network pricing. It can create a bill even when compute is free.

Eligible new customers receive $300 for 90 days. Without a paid billing upgrade, resources stop when that trial ends. Continuing with the ongoing free tier requires an active billing account, and a paid account can incur charges outside its allowances.

3. AWS Free Tier / Free Plan

AWS is a temporary learning option for a new VM. The current Free Tier offer provides $100 on signup and up to $100 more for completing eligible activities. The Free plan ends after 6 months or when credits run out, whichever comes first.

The AWS Free Tier FAQ says most new customers can sign up without a payment method, although identity verification may require one. When the Free plan expires, AWS suspends the account and its projects. Upgrade to a Paid plan only when you accept the resulting billing terms.

Always-free allowances for selected AWS services do not make an EC2 VM permanently free. Check your actual plan rather than applying an older tutorial's signup rules.

4. Azure Free Account

Azure's free-account details list $200 for 30 days and selected Linux or Windows VM allowances for 12 months. Those VM allowances apply only to specified sizes and monthly quantities. They are different from Azure's always-free non-VM products.

You need card-based verification. To continue beyond the credit or 30-day limit, move to pay-as-you-go pricing. Otherwise, Azure disables the subscription and services, as explained in Microsoft's guide to avoiding free-account charges.

Before deploying, check the VM size, disk, IP address, and transfer estimate together. A free VM-hour allowance does not cover every attached service.

5. DigitalOcean Trial Credit

DigitalOcean Droplets are paid VMs. Its current Signup Credit documentation says the first team receives $5 automatically, expiring 90 days after signup. You must add a valid payment method before creating a Droplet or other resource.

Separate referral or promotional offers can have different terms. Do not assume an old advertised credit applies to your account. Confirm the balance, eligible products, and expiry in the control panel.

DigitalOcean's credit terms say usage beyond available credit is billed. Delete test resources you no longer need, including separately retained storage and backups, rather than waiting for the credit to run out.

6. Vultr Free Tier Or Promotional Credits

Vultr's current account-creation guide describes promotional credits for up to 30 days and requires payment verification. It tells users to deprovision resources before the credit expires to avoid further charges. The amount and eligible services depend on the offer you actually receive.

The 2023 Free Tier announcement described an early-access program. That historical announcement does not confirm that a new user can provision a recurring free VM today. We did not verify current admission to that program, so this comparison treats Vultr as a promotional trial option.

Check the credit's expiry and resource restrictions before deploying. Use a paid plan for your estimate unless the account explicitly confirms a free allowance.

Why LightNode Is Listed As A Cheap Alternative

LightNode is a paid VPS alternative. Its official site documents hourly and monthly billing, Windows and Linux options, and multiple global locations. That makes it a candidate for a short regional test when the free tiers above do not fit your OS or location.

Hourly billing still requires cleanup. LightNode's billing documentation says a stopped host continues to accrue charges until released, and a partial hour is charged as an hour. Check the selected configuration, network allowance, and any extra charges in the console before deployment.

Use the LightNode provider profile for official billing references, then compare it with the full provider directory. Any signup bonus is finite promotional credit. It does not change LightNode's classification as paid hosting.

Free VPS Safety Checklist

Before you deploy:

1. Record the account plan, credit balance, and expiry. Configure billing alerts and check whether spending limits actually stop resources.
2. Estimate the VM, public IPv4 address, disk, outbound traffic, and backups together.
3. Check the effect of upgrading the account or activating a paid-only service before confirming it.
4. Delete unused instances and separately billed resources, including volumes, snapshots, and load balancers.
5. Keep backups outside the trial account and export important data before its end date.

When A Paid VPS Is The Better Answer

Choose a paid VPS instead of a free tier when:

• You need continuity for customer workloads and cannot accept trial expiry or resource reclaim.
• Your OS, region, memory, or transfer needs exceed the documented free allowance.
• You need support and service terms that the free account does not provide.
• A fixed resource bundle is easier for you to budget than separate cloud services.

Compare the total recurring cost after the introductory credit. Start with the provider directory, VPS options under $5, and pricing guides. Check each plan's current availability and renewal terms. A paid plan still needs backups and billing checks.

FAQ

Is there an unlimited free VPS?

None of the verified offers in this guide provides unlimited free VPS resources. Their limits include compute usage, supported regions, resource reclaim, or credit expiry.

Which free VPS is closest to permanent?

Oracle and Google Cloud both document ongoing compute allowances. Oracle is a starting point for a lab if capacity is available. Google's allowance is limited to eligible US-region usage. Neither promises uninterrupted hosting forever.

Can I use a free VPS without a credit card?

AWS currently says most new customers do not need a payment method to sign up, with identity-verification exceptions. This is a time-limited Free plan. Oracle, Google Cloud, Azure, DigitalOcean, and Vultr have payment-verification requirements in the documentation linked above.
